Acredita-se que o hentai seja inspirado em formas de arte erótica que já existem no Japão desde o Período Edo, que ocorreu de 1600 a 1867. Naquela época, eram comuns gravuras tradicionais, conhecidas comoukiyo-e, que versavam todos os temas, inclusive o sexo e a nudez. Estas eram conhecidas como shunga, e utilizadas como manual para instruir recém-casados ao sexo, ou como objeto para auxiliar a masturbação. Muitas vezes, coleções de shunga eram dadas como presente de casamento para serem usadas na lua-de-mel.
